Winter Wheat Afghan
crochet pattern | $5.00 USD
The Winter Wheat Afghan is an easy crochet project for confident beginners. Simple lines and striking stitches create an inviting texture in this large throw blanket. Made with worsted-weight wool in a classic design, it is sure to be a keepsake piece.
How This Blanket Is Made
This blanket is made with twenty 12-inch square motifs worked in the round. At the center of each motif is a large circle made with 28 treble crochets worked into a ring. As the circle is transformed into a square, bands of puff V-stitches are worked on four sides.
The blanket is assembled with a simple whipstitch to join motifs into four strips. The strips are then sewn together and a wide border is added. The bands of puff V-stitches in the motifs continue into the border and add a refined finish.
Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

The sample shown here was made with a G/6/4.00mm crochet hook and Cascade Yarns Cascade 220 medium (worsted) weight 100% wool (3.53 oz/220 yds/100 g per hank) in the color #1003 Aventurine Heather. The project required 20 hanks of this yarn.
Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with medium-weight wool, but feel free to substitute the medium-weight yarn of your choice. Acrylic and cotton would also be good options. Lighter or heavier weight yarns may also be used. A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted. Working with a thinner or thicker yarn may result in different gauge measurements, which will affect the Finished Measurements.

Gauge
Rnds 1–4 of Motif = 4 inches (10 cm)

Though exact gauge is not essential, for best appearance it should be close.
I used a G/6/4.00mm crochet hook. Select the hook size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
