Save Me A Spot Blanket
crochet pattern | $5.00 USD
Stitched in classic retro colors, the Save Me a Spot Blanket will add a warm and inviting touch to any room.
This 60- by 48-inch blanket incorporates a variation of the two-color interlocking block stitch into a unique design that resembles woven fabric.
This beginner-friendly pattern is a great introduction to simple colorwork. Best of all, the fabric is reversible!
How This Blanket Is Made
In each row, groups of 3 stitches are skipped after working a chain-3. In the next row, you will work over the chain-3 and into the skipped stitches. The beauty of this stitch pattern is that it’s easy to see the stitches into which you will work, as they will always be directly below a chain-3.
The blanket is worked lengthwise on the right side throughout. The yarn is fastened off at the end of each row and reattached at the beginning of the next row, starting and ending with an 8-inch tail. These tails will later be incorporated into a fringe.
Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
Skill Level: Confident Beginner
Concentration Level
Little concentration required. Straightforward and uncomplicated stitching. The stitch pattern can be easily memorized. The first few rows, which establish the 4-row stitch pattern, require a little more concentration. Once you’re used to working over the chains and into the stitches two rows below, very little focus is required.
Stitches Used
Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet
Techniques Used
Working into stitches two rows below (AKA spike stitches), adding a simple fringe
Finished Measurements (approximate size after blocking)
60 x 48 inches (152.5 x 122 cm), excluding fringe
Medium (CYC #4) Weight Yarn
3300 - 3500 yards (3018 - 3200 m)
The main sample shown here was made with a G/6/4mm crochet hook and Cascade 220 medium (worsted) weight wool yarn (220 yds/201 m; 3.5 oz/100 g per hank) in the colors #8010 Natural, #2448 Mallard, #9451 Lake Chelan Heather, #9564 Birch Heather, and #2453 Pumpkin Spice. The project required 11 hanks of Natural, 2 hanks of Mallard, and 1 hank each of Lake Chelan Heather, Birch Heather, and Pumpkin Spice.
For a 2-color blanket (1 Main Color and 1 Contrasting Color for the stripes), you will need approx. 2420 yards (2213 m/1100 g) of medium-weight yarn for the Main Color and 880 yards (805 m/400 g) of medium-weight yarn for the Contrasting Color. The blanket in the last photo was made by Randy Cavaliere using Red Heart Super Saver in white for the Main Color and Icelandic for the Contrasting Color.
Blanket width and length may be adjusted to suit your needs.
To increase or decrease length, add to or subtract from the foundation chain in multiples of 6. To adjust width, stop after any repeat of Row 4 and finish with Rows 165 and 166.
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to increase the size of your blanket.
Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with medium-weight wool, but feel free to substitute the medium-weight yarn of your choice. Acrylic and cotton would also be good options. Lighter or heavier weight yarns may also be used. A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted. Working with a thinner or thicker yarn may result in different gauge measurements, which will affect the Finished Measurements.
Additional Tools and Materials
Size G/6/4.00mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Gauge
19 dc and 13 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
Though exact gauge is not essential, this stitch pattern will look best with fairly tight stitches.
I used a G/6/4.00mm crochet hook. Select the hook size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
