Painter’s Garden Cowl

crochet pattern | $5.00 USD

Vibrant colors and luscious textures abound in this cowl inspired by Impressionist gardens. As you crochet, the self-striping yarn does all the colorwork for you.

The floral motif in this cowl was designed to work with the color sequences in the yarn so that a different color is dominant in each round, meaning you never have to cut your yarn or change colors!

Each motif will be a little different, and that’s the magic – with this pattern you are sure to create your own unique accessory.

How This Cowl Is Made

This intermediate-level project combines a variety of stitches, including puffs, popcorns, spike stitches, and granny stitches. Square- and triangle-shaped floral motifs are joined as you go into two chevron panels, which are then connected by sections of granny stitch to form a tube.

In addition to the written pattern, a detailed, 11-page photo tutorial will walk you step-by-step through how to make the motifs and assemble the cowl.

Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Concentration Level
Fair amount of focus required. This pattern involves the use of several special stitches (see list below), so depending on your experience level, some focus may be required for the first few motifs you make. Granny stitch sections can be worked on autopilot, but the joining rows require fairly constant focus.

Stitches Used
Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, puff, beginning popcorn, popcorn, spike single crochet, and granny stitch

Techniques Used
Adjustable ring (aka magic ring), working in the round, join-as-you-go assembly

Finished Measurements (approximate size after blocking)
30 inches (76 cm) in circumference x 12 inches (30.5 cm) long

Medium (CYC #4) Weight Yarn
420 - 440 yards (384 - 402 m)

The  sample shown here was made with a G/6/4.00mm crochet hook and Noro Silk Garden medium weight silk/mohair/lambswool yarn (110 yds/100 m; 1.75 oz/50 g per hank) in the colorway #208. The project required 4 skeins of this yarn.

Model shown required nearly all yardage. Working a gauge swatch prior to stitching cowl is highly recommended. Depending on your gauge, you may need to purchase an additional skein or unravel the swatch to complete this project.

Cowl circumference may be adjusted by working more or fewer granny stitch rows.
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to increase the size of your cowl.

Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with medium-weight wool, but feel free to substitute the medium-weight yarn of your choice. Acrylic would also be a good option. Lighter or heavier weight yarns may also be used. A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted. Working with a thinner or thicker yarn may result in different gauge measurements, which will affect the Finished Measurements.

Gauge
Motif = 4 inches (10 cm) square
In granny stitch: 12 dc and 7 rows = 3 inches (8 cm), blocked
Though exact gauge is not essential, for best appearance it should be close.
I used a G/6/4.00mm crochet hook. Select the hook size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
