Painter’s Garden Blanket

crochet pattern | $8.00 USD

The famous Impressionist painter Claude Monet once said, “My finest masterpiece is my garden.” Taking inspiration from Monet’s beloved gardens, the Painter’s Garden Blanket combines vibrant colors and luscious textures in a painterly landscape you can curl up under.

This project invites you to be the painter embarking on your next work of art. If this idea is a bit intimidating, that’s okay—the pattern as written uses a self-striping yarn that will do all the colorwork for you to produce the blanket shown here. If the idea of painting a blanket ignites your creativity, feel free to run with it! Here are some ideas to get you started:

Choose a self-striping yarn in one color for the motifs and another color for the sections in between. Or crochet multicolored motifs with a new color in each round and use a solid color for the granny stitch sections. This blanket also makes for a wonderful scrap yarn project. Let your imagination be your guide!

How This Blanket Is Made

This entertaining project combines a variety of stitches, including puffs, popcorns, spike stitches, and granny stitches. Square- and triangle-shaped floral motifs are joined as you go. Granny stitch sections are worked outward from the motif panels. Side 1 is worked from the center out, then Side 2 is worked from the center out on the opposite side.

Finally, choose between two edging options to frame your blanket masterpiece!

In addition to a detailed, professionally edited and tested pattern, three photo tutorials will guide you as you crochet the motifs and assemble them into panels, and then work the granny stitch sections between panels.

Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Skill Level: Intermediate

Concentration Level
Fair amount of focus required. This pattern involves the use of several special stitches (see list below), so depending on your experience level, some focus may be required for the first few motifs you make. Granny stitch sections can be worked on autopilot, but the joining rows require fairly constant focus.

Stitches Used
Chain, slip stitch, single crochet, double crochet, puff, beginning popcorn, popcorn, spike single crochet, clusters, and granny stitch

Techniques Used
Working in the round, join-as-you-go assembly, working granny stitch onto a motif panel, using stitches in place of chains to end a round

Finished Measurements (approximate size after blocking)
51 x 70 inches (129.5 x 178 cm)

Medium (CYC #4) Weight Yarn
4300 - 4400 yards (3932 - 4023 m)
Total yarn needed for motifs = approx. 628g (1570m/1717 yds)
Total yarn needed for granny stitch sections = approx. 882g (2205m/2411 yds)

Pattern includes a full breakdown of yardage needed for blanket, each individual motif, each panel, and granny stitch sections to help you plan your blanket.

The main sample shown here was made with a H/8/5.00mm crochet hook and Sirdar Jewelspun medium (Aran) weight acrylic yarn (546 yds/500 m; 7 oz/200 g per hank) in the color #844 Glacier. The project required 8 balls of this yarn.

Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with medium-weight acrylic yarn, but feel free to substitute the medium-weight yarn of your choice. Wool and cotton would also be good options. Lighter or heavier weight yarns may also be used. A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted. Working with a thinner or thicker yarn may result in different gauge measurements, which will affect the Finished Measurements.

NOTE: Different yarns may be used for the different sections of the blanket, but they must closely match in weight. For instance, if you use a yarn for the granny stitch sections that is heavier than the yarn you used for the motif panels, the fabric will warp or ripple. If your yarn for the granny stitch sections is lighter, the sides of the blanket will pull in.

Additional Tools and Materials
Size H/8/5.00mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
Scissors

Gauge
Popcorn and Puff Motifs: 4 inches (10 cm) square
In granny stitch: 5 3-dc groups and 9 rows = 4 inches (10 cm)
Exact gauge is not essential but for best appearance it should be close.
I used an H/8/5.00mm crochet hook. Use the hook size that gives the best appearance with your yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more yarn than listed.
