Kindred Blanket
crochet pattern | $5.00 USD
The Kindred Blanket is easy to crochet using a medium-weight yarn. Worked in rows, this blanket combines two different stitch patterns to create a textured fabric that is also reversible.
This mindful make is perfect for when you need an uncomplicated project to stitch while watching movies or winding down at the end of the day. It’s one of those projects that will look beautiful and inviting in a basket next to your favorite chair.
How This Blanket Is Made
Each row begins and ends with half-double crochet in the third loop only to create a ribbed texture on either end of the blanket. In the middle of every row, overlapping V-stitches are worked into chain spaces two rows below to create columns of interlocking stitches.
Once the desired length is achieved, a ribbed border is added to the top and bottom. Ribbing is worked in rows perpendicular to blanket top or bottom edge. Ribbing is attached as it's created by slip stitching to stitches along edge.
Overlapping V-stitches create a dense but flexible fabric, making this a great blanket to curl up under.
Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
Skill Level: Confident Beginner
Concentration Level
Some concentration required. The stitch pattern can be easily memorized. The first few rows require a little more concentration. Once you’re used to working the Overlapping V-Stitch and Half Double Crochet in the 3rd Loop Only, less focus is required, but you will still need to pay close attention to make sure that you’re inserting your hook in the correct space. It’s also easy to accidentally pick up other strands on your work, so it’s important to turn to the opposite side to check your work frequently.
Stitches Used
Chain, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet
Techniques Used
Working in rows, working into a chain space 2 rows below, making V-stitches, drawing up loops of double crochet stitches to height of current row

Blanket width and length may be adjusted to suit your needs.
To increase or decrease width, add to the Setup Row or subtract from the Setup Row in multiples of 3. To increase length, repeat Row 3 until fabric measures desired length, before continuing with final row and top border.
Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to increase the size of your blanket.
Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with medium-weight wool, but feel free to substitute the medium-weight yarn of your choice. Lighter or heavier weight yarns may also be used. A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted. Working with a thinner or thicker yarn may result in different gauge measurements, which will affect the Finished Measurements.
The overlapping V-stitch used in this design requires a yarn with some elasticity. Testers have found that wool and superwash wool yarns are easiest to work with, while cotton and acrylic yarns presented some difficulty and produced a less attractive fabric.
The most important thing is getting a fabric you like. For this reason, you are encouraged to crochet a gauge swatch with your chosen yarn before beginning the project to make sure that it will produce the desired results. Instructions for making the gauge swatch are included in the pattern.
Additional Tools and Materials
Size G/6/4.00mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Gauge
In half double crochet 3rd loop only: 26 sts and 20 rows = 5 inches (13 cm), blocked
In overlapping V-stitch: 21 sts and 20 rows = 5 inches (13 cm), blocked
Though exact gauge is not essential, this stitch pattern will look best with fairly tight stitches.
I used a G/6/4.00mm crochet hook. Select the hook size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
