Keep A Light On Blanket
crochet pattern | $6.00 USD
The Keep A Light On Blanket is designed to be as soothing to make as it is to snuggle under. This modern throw blanket crochet pattern blends calming repetition with just enough stitch variety to keep your hands engaged and your mind at ease. The thick, puffy texture feels wonderfully soft as you work, and the finished blanket offers warmth and comfort whenever you need it.
Worked in rows with medium-weight yarn, this project uses a combination of three stitch patterns to create a beautifully textured, fully reversible fabric. It’s written for intermediate crocheters, but adventurous beginners ready to explore spike stitches will enjoy it too. The pattern also includes clear instructions for 7 sizes, from a sweet lovey to a generous large throw.
With clearly written instructions and detailed photo and video tutorials, you’ll feel confident bringing this cozy design to life.
How This Blanket Is Made
The Keep A Light On Blanket is a relaxing crochet project using medium-weight yarn. Worked in rows, this blanket combines three different stitch patterns to create a textured fabric that is also reversible. This intermediate level project is also great for the adventurous beginner who is ready to tackle spike stitches. Be sure to check out the photo tutorials at the end of the main pattern for help with making these unique stitches.
Before You Begin
If you notice a distinct curve forming after working several rows, this is usually a sign that the foundation chain was worked too tightly. To resolve this, I recommend restarting and using a larger hook for the foundation chain only, then switching back to your regular hook for Row 1.
Another effective option is to begin with a row of foundation single crochet, which is more flexible than a traditional starting chain. If you choose this method, simply replace Row 1 of the pattern with the foundation single crochet instructions below.
Alternate Row 1:First foundation sc(see Special Stitches below), 57 [89, 117, 141, 177, 211, 263] next foundation sc(see Special Stitches), turn. (58 [90, 118, 142, 178, 212, 264] sts)
Special Stitches
First foundation single crochet (first foundation sc): Ch 2, insert hook in 2nd ch from hook, yo, pull up a lp, yo, draw through 1 lp on hook (ch-1 completed), yo, draw through rem 2 lps on hook.
Next foundation single crochet (next foundation sc): *Insert hook in last ch-1 made, yo, pull up a lp, draw through 1 lp on hook (ch-1 completed), yo, draw through rem 2 lps on hook, rep from * as indicated.
Pattern is written in US crochet terms.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Concentration Level
Some concentration required. This pattern involves the use of special stitches (see list below), so depending on your experience level, some focus may be required. In addition, care should be taken when making the spike double crochet (spk dc) stitches in the center panel section. It’s very important to make these stitches loosely.
Stitches Used
Chain, single crochet, double crochet, spike double crochet, spike extended double crochet

Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with medium-weight wool, but feel free to substitute the medium-weight yarn of your choice. Acrylic would also be good a option. Lighter or heavier weight yarns may also be used. A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted. Working with a thinner or thicker yarn may result in different gauge measurements, which will affect the Finished Measurements.
Additional Tools and Materials
Size G/6/4.00mm crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Tapestry needle
Scissors
Gauge
In spike extended double crochet: 22 sts and 16 rows = 5 inches (12.5 cm), blocked
Though exact gauge is not essential, for best appearance it should be close.
I used a G/6/4.00mm hook. Select the hook size that gives the best appearance for your choice of yarn and your tension.
A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
