Fade to the Top of the Mountain Shawl

crochet pattern | $5.00 USD

With its symmetrical triangle shape and generous depth, the “Fade to the Top of the Mountain Shawl” is a versatile accessory. Wear it as a neck scarf with a cardigan and jeans, or drape it around your shoulders on cool evenings. The unique placement of the shifts between three colors makes it as much fun to crochet as it is to wear. Use the coloring sheet at the end of the pattern to choose your colors and plan your fade!

How This Shawl Is Made

The construction of this shawl involves simple stitches and relatively uncomplicated shaping, making it a great pattern for an adventurous beginner. With increases at the center of every third row, the shawl begins with a diamond-shaped main panel. This center panel is quick and easy to crochet, and the pattern is easy to memorize. After the center panel is complete, you will work one wing at a time, decreasing along the top edge to create a triangle. These wings require a little more concentration. The pattern includes crochet stitch charts for the main panel and wings, as well as a Color Sequence Chart & Checklist to help you keep track of color changes as you go.

Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Super Fine (CYC #1) Weight Yarn
1100 - 1400 yards (1006 - 1280 m)

The main sample shown here was made with a C/2/2.75mm crochet hook and We Crochet/Knitpicks Hawthorne super fine (fingering) weight superwash wool/polyamide yarn (357 yds/326 m; 3.53 oz/100 g per hank) in the colors #27417 Eliot, #27835 Macadam, and #26688 Slate. The project required 1 hank in each of these colors. In fact, the sample shown required nearly all yardage of colors Macadam and Slate. Depending on your gauge, you may need to purchase additional hanks.

Note that Eliot and Macadam are in the Hawthorne Fingering Multi collection; Slate is in the Kettle Dyed collection.

Suggested Yarn Substitutes
Sample was made with super-fine (fingering) weight wool, but feel free to substitute the fingering-weight yarn of your choice. Because results may vary, crocheting a gauge swatch with your alternative yarn is recommended. Instructions for a gauge swatch are listed under the Gauge heading below.

Gauge
29 sts = 4 inches (10 cm); 16 rows = 4 inches (10 cm) blocked
Though exact gauge is not essential, for best appearance it should be close.

A significantly different gauge may require more or less yarn than listed.
