Introducing the Botany Blanket Crochet Pattern

I’m so excited to share the news that the Botany Blanket crochet pattern is now available!

Looking back over my files for this blanket, I see now that I’ve been working on it off-and-on for over two years. When I first started out, I was inspired by English cottage design trends. The early pattern even had a working name of “Teatime in the Garden.” Later, when designing the flowers, I took inspiration from botanical illustrations. Finally, the layout and floral stripe pattern were inspired by Victorian textiles and wallpaper design. The inspiration behind the blanket and some of the details have evolved over time, but the essence has stayed the same, and I’m so pleased with how it’s turned out.

I’ve taken great care with this pattern to provide detailed instructions and resources to help you along so that you can have an entertaining and stress-free time crocheting your blanket. For the first time ever, I’m including multi-colored stitch charts – the symbols for each round follow the colors in the motif itself. I’ve learned from industry news and customer feedback that this is very helpful for makers with learning differences. But I’ve discovered that I find the charts easier to read too!

This pattern is also accompanied by 3 video tutorials. I’ve included QR codes in the pattern pdf, in addition to the usual links, so that even if you print the pattern, you can get to the video easily. I do hope that you’ll have as much fun making your Botany Blanket as I had designing it!

About This Blanket

Cozy up under romantic floral stripes in this blanket made with hexagon, square, and triangle motifs. Tonal yarn colors add depth to the flowers and leaves, which pop against a natural white background. Each motif is then outlined in color so that when the motifs are joined, bold floral stripes appear. The unique layout of this blanket creates a scalloped edge on the short sides, perfect for draping over a bed.

Choose from two sizes: instructions for a large throw and lapghan are included.

How This Blanket Is Made

This blanket is made with hexagon, square, and triangle motifs, which are joined into strips with single crochet. By working the seam on the wrong side, a dotted line on the front will separate each motif. The strips are then single crochet joined together and a border is added. Photo tutorials and two short videos will assist you in assembling your blanket.

Pattern is written in US crochet terms.

Concentration Level

Some concentration required. This pattern involves the use of several special stitches (see list below), so depending on your experience level, some focus may be required for the first few motifs you make.

Stitches Used

Chains, single crochet, half double crochet, double crochet, clusters, shells, single crochet join, half double crochet join, double crochet join, single crochet decreases (sc2tog and sc3tog), double crochet decreases (dc3tog)

Techniques Used

Adjustable ring (magic loop), working in rounds, joining motifs and strips with single crochet

Finished Measurements

Large Throw: 69.5 x 56.5 inches (176.5 x 143.5 cm)
Lapghan: 51.5 x 44 inches (131 x 113 cm)

Materials

Large Throw: approximately 6000 yards medium-weight yarn in 11 colors
Lapghan: approximately 3400 yards medium-weight yarn in 11 colors

The sample shown here is the Large Throw size and was made with a G/6/4.00mm crochet hook and Cascade 220 medium (worsted) weight wool yarn (220 yds/201 m; 3.5 oz/100 g per hank) in the following colors: #9572 Cabernet, #1075 Raspberry Coulis, #1076 Antique Lilac, #1036 Chive, #1052 Calla Green, #1051 Fern, #8010 Natural, #2415 Sunflower, #8412 Pear, #1054 Mallard Blue, and #9634 Aqua Haze.

* Pattern includes a chart with approximate quantity (in yards and meters) of each yarn color needed for each size blanket.

Yarn Substitution

My sample was made with medium-weight wool, but feel free to substitute the medium-weight yarn of your choice. Acrylic and cotton would also be good options. Lighter or heavier weight yarns may also be used. A different weight yarn may require a different size hook, as well as more or less yarn than noted.
