Hello crocheters,

I’m happy to announce my first pattern of the year — the Cozy Calico Blanket. This pattern was originally featured in the Winter 2024 issue of Crochet World magazine (under the name “A Crocheted Christmas Quilt”), and I’m so excited to offer it to you now as well. Publishing the pattern myself was a great opportunity to add all the extra tutorial photos, stitch charts, tips, and other resources that just won’t fit in the pages of a magazine.

This design was inspired by all the quilts my mother made when I was growing up. I have such fond memories of snuggling up under her quilts to read or watch movies… and of building blanket forts in the living room.

Drawing from patchwork quilt designs, this blanket uses a half-square-triangle colorwork technique to combine cheerful colors with delicate, puff-adorned lace.

Quilters use half square triangles in designs for many traditional quilt blocks in which two triangles of different color are arranged to create a simple square shape.

How This Blanket Is Made

In this quilt-inspired crochet blanket, classic half square triangles are crocheted with two colors in each round. Two sides are crocheted in one color before changing color on the second chain in the corner. The remaining two sides are crocheted with the new color before joining and turning at the end of the round. (If that sounds complicated, don’t worry — a video tutorial will help walk you through the steps.)

In this way, there’s no need to fasten off your yarn between rounds or carry unused yarn behind your work. Simply change color every time you return to the yarn you dropped previously.
