As I get ready to release next month’s new pattern, I’ve been thinking about what makes shawls such timeless, satisfying projects.

Here’s what I’ve found matters most to crocheters when considering which shawl to make next:

1. Accessible to Many Skill Levels

The most-loved shawl patterns are those that feel welcoming to newer crocheters but still satisfying to those with more experience. Think: simple stitches that create beautiful effects, with options to customize or level up the design for those who want a bit more challenge.

2. The Right Pace for the Right Mood

Some days, you want a soothing, simple project that flies off the hook. Other times, you’re in the mood for a challenge—something with stitch variety, shaping, or new techniques that require you to slow down and focus on your work.

There’s no one-size-fits-all “perfect” pace. What makes a shawl great is how well it suits your current mood, time, and crafting goals.

3. Beautiful Stitch Texture or Colorwork

Whether it’s stripes, lace, or subtle texture, we all love a little “wow factor.” Even the simplest triangle can shine with the right yarn and stitch combo.

4. Yarn That Feels Just Right

Drape is everything. Fingering or sport-weight yarns are popular for light, flowy shawls. DK, worsted, and bulky make for cozier wraps. Even better if the project uses yarn that’s already in your stash!

Triangle shawls are perennial favorites: they’re easy to style and flattering on everyone. Rectangles are classic. Asymmetrical shapes give a modern edge. Crescent shawls are easy to wear, gracefully hugging the shoulders. The shape affects both the look and the joy of making it.

6. Easy to Take on the Go

Shawls are the original portable project. Whether you’re commuting, traveling, or stitching on the couch, a shawl that’s easy to pack and pick up again is a win.
